Before the plumber arrives

  • Stop running water into the affected drains. For a main-line backup, that means every drain in the house, including the washing machine and dishwasher.
  • Find the cleanout: a capped pipe, usually in the basement floor or wall near where the sewer leaves the house, sometimes outside near the foundation. Clear the space around it.
  • If sewage has come up, keep people and pets off it and ventilate the room. Note what came up and from which drain.
  • Mention any chemical cleaner you poured in and when.

When cleaning is not enough

A main line that backs up every few months is telling you something: roots growing in at a joint, a low spot where water sits, or a pipe that has cracked. Cleaning buys time. A camera inspection ($125–$500) shows which it is, and the sewer line page covers what the repair options cost, from a spot repair to lining or replacing the run.

Licensing

South Dakota requires a State Plumbing Commission license for plumbing work on a property connected to public sewer, with exemptions such as repairs on your own property (SDCL 36-25-17), and inside Sioux Falls the City's guide says anyone paid to do plumbing work must work through a City-licensed plumbing contractor. Whether a given drain call counts is a question for the Commission, so the safe choice is a plumber on both lists. The license check page walks through the state and City lists in a few minutes.

Common questions

How much does drain cleaning cost in Sioux Falls?

As of November 6, 2026, national cost guides put one clogged sink, tub, shower or toilet at $100–$275, a main line or several fixtures at $175–$600, and hydro jetting a badly blocked main drain at $300–$800. No Sioux Falls plumber publishes a price list; these are national ranges.

One drain is slow. Is that the main line?

Usually not. One slow fixture is a clog in that fixture's trap or branch line. When the lowest drain in the house gurgles or backs up, or flushing a toilet makes a tub fill, the blockage is in the main line that everything shares.

Snaking or hydro jetting?

Snaking (a cable auger) punches through a clog and is the standard first step at $175–$600 for a main line. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the whole pipe wall; it costs more ($300–$800) and is the right call for grease, scale or roots that keep coming back. Old clay or cast-iron lines should be camera-inspected before jetting.

Should I get a camera inspection?

For a one-off bathroom clog, no. For a main-line backup, a second backup within a year, roots, or a house with an older sewer line, yes: a camera inspection runs $125–$500 and tells you whether you are paying for a cleaning or looking at a repair.

Will chemical drain cleaner fix it?

Sometimes, for a light organic clog in a sink. It does nothing for a main-line blockage, it can damage older pipes and fixtures, and it makes the plumber's job less safe if it is still sitting in the line. If you have used it, say so when you book.
